The Hope Downs 1 mine in the east Pilbara region of Western Australia, is adjacent to a water course rich in cultural value.

Hope Downs 1 is an example of a mine where mining below the water table is undertaken. The abstraction and discharge of water and the ongoing maintenance of Weeli Wolli Creek are therefore vital to the ongoing operations of Hope Downs 1.

Discharge of surplus mine water from Hope North to Weeli Wolli Creek commenced in January 2007. The amount of water flowing from the Hope Downs mine site is now much greater than the natural flow of the spring.
